ART NARRATIVE

The spa is where the stories live

The art collection at the Grand Wailea Spa is where the stories live. It encourages a soothing, balanced experience inspired by nature and location. The artwork captures the interplay between the five elements of nature and the ever-changing Hawaiian moon phases, connecting guests to the natural world. Art selections, from stunning landscapes to intricate botanical prints—feature shades of ocean blues, greens, and vibrant pops of colour reminiscent of Hawaiian flowers and sunsets, promoting relaxation, rejuvenation, and a deep sense of connection.

The commissioned artwork for the spa is a striking, seven-foot-tall sculpture by artist Tim Garcia, crafted from Lava Stone. Its thematic identity is firmly rooted in Mana, the Hawaiian spiritual concept of a universal life force. As a sacred focal point within the ritual space, the white stone sculpture is intended to embody objects possessing great Mana, thus symbolizing sanctification, strength, and resilience. Ultimately, its presence serves as a crucial, tangible reminder to guests to respect and preserve Hawaii's natural environment and to recognize the profound connection and community inherent in the sharing of this powerful spiritual energy.

The ceramic installation for this area, titled Gathering and Coexistence (part of the artist's larger body of work, Coexistence), is by local Hawaiian artist Jisoo Boggs. The installation consists of multiple circular, fine art acquisition pieces ranging in size from 12′′ to 18′′, and is realized through ceramic. Boggs's work uniquely expresses the dichotomy found in nature, juxtaposing its raw, often chaotic repetition with the underlying order, direction, and harmony. This particular series is drawn from inspiration found in Hawaii's diverse natural landscape. The artist will create the final works using a selected color palette, reflecting her contemporary ceramic style which often features intricate, porous textures that evoke organic growth and marine life.
